and shared entrances

Living in a building in Toronto means two kinds of doors: the suite door you control and the common doors the building manages. We service both, working within house rules on the outer hardware and giving your own door a cylinder, strike and closer that suit how the unit is actually used.

Arrange a lock check for your Toronto property

We are straightforward about time. A locksmith heading to Toronto calls when he is on the way, gives you an honest sense of how long the job will take once he has seen the door, and tells you if something changes. Nobody is left watching the driveway wondering, and nobody discovers the visit ran long only when the invoice arrives.

How a visit goes

After a break-in, people want two things: the door secure tonight and a sense that it will not happen again. We deal with the first on the spot, repairing the frame, replacing what was forced and rekeying every lock a stolen key might open.

    Call and describe the door

Describe the property, the hardware and what has changed, and the visit starts from what you have seen.

    On our way

Together we list the doors, then decide who should open everything, who should open a floor and who should open one room. That structure becomes the keying chart.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 58 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 58% of homes in Toronto were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Where most homes were built decades ago, doors often still carry their original mortise locks and brass knobs. That hardware can usually be cleaned, re-sprung and kept in service, with a modern deadbolt added above it for strength without losing the look.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 23% of homes in Toronto (2021 Census). In a building, a lockout happens in a hallway rather than a porch, and the neighbours notice. A locksmith confirms you belong to the suite, opens the door with the least fuss the lock allows, and leaves the door and cylinder intact for the night.

Straight answers

How is a forced storefront door repaired?

Aluminum storefront doors are attacked at the narrow stile, which bends under a pry bar, or at the hookbolt and glass. The locksmith straightens or replaces the damaged section where possible, fits a new narrow-stile deadbolt or hookbolt with its strike, and adds a latch guard or anti-pry astragal along the meeting edge so a bar has no purchase. Cores are rekeyed and codes reviewed. The inside release stays a single motion so the exit route is unchanged.

Should I rekey after a renovation or when a cleaner stops coming?

It is good practice whenever a key has been out of your hands for a while and you are not certain it came back. Contractors, cleaners, sitters and short-term guests all have honest reasons to hold a key, and most return it, but a rekey at the end of the arrangement is what turns 'probably' into certainty. Some households make it a habit at the close of every project.

My keys were lost with something showing my address. Is rekeying enough?

Rekeying is exactly the right response, because it makes the lost key useless at every door that was pinned. The locksmith will walk the property with you to be sure nothing is missed, including the garage side door, a shed and any padlock the same key opened, and will suggest changing any garage keypad code that was written on the same ring. After that, whoever finds the keys is holding brass that opens nothing on your property.

What do lock grades mean when I am picking a deadbolt?

Residential deadbolts are graded under an industry standard in three categories, security, durability and finish, with letter grades from C through A, so a lock marked with three A grades has met the highest level in each. Heavier commercial-pattern bolts are graded 1, 2 or 3, with 1 the highest. The grades let you match hardware to a busy family door or an exposed side entrance without relying on the weight of the box.
