Spare Car Key Duplication: before you call

The proximity fob has ridden in a pocket for years, the range feels shorter than it used to, and a dashboard warning mentioned a battery a while back.

The neighbourhood locksmith, on your side.

The proximity fob has ridden in a pocket for years, the range feels shorter than it used to, and a dashboard warning mentioned a battery a while back. Nobody has sorted out what happens on the day it finally goes dark.

Worth answering before the call

Where is the vehicle usually parked? Is there more than one vehicle you would like keyed the same way? Has a key ever gone missing that was never accounted for?

What should I bring to the appointment?

Bring the vehicle, its existing key, photo identification, and something that ties you to the vehicle: registration, or a document showing you are authorized to hold a key if the car belongs to someone else, such as an employer or a family member. Knowing the VIN in advance, printed or photographed from the door jamb, also helps the locksmith confirm the exact key system before arriving.

Should I get the locks rekeyed when I get a spare, or is that a different service?

They are related but not identical, since a car's door and ignition locks are a separate mechanical layer from the immobilizer even though both systems usually get touched in the same visit. Making a spare and removing a genuinely unaccounted-for key's electronic access are handled together, and if that lost key's blade could still turn a matching door cylinder by hand, the locksmith rekeys that cylinder as part of the same appointment.
