- The call
- Overnight the deadbolt froze, and this morning the key would only turn partway. One more push and it sheared off flush with the face of the cylinder. There is nothing left to grip, and the cold is not helping.

The apartment key snapped mid-turn, leaving the cylinder twisted halfway between locked and open. The building manager's spare is somewhere across town and nobody else has a copy.
What you have when the locksmith leaves matters as much as what was removed. The fragment is out and shown to you. The cylinder has been cleaned of grit, its pins and springs checked, and dressed with the lubricant its maker specifies. A new key has been cut from the key code or by reading the cuts on the two halves with a gauge, not copied from a worn original, and tested from both sides with the door open and closed. If the key broke because the lock was on its way out, a rekey or a replacement cylinder is offered as its own decision, explained first.

Broken Key Extraction · Agincourt North

Scene 1
A car adds a few questions. Did the key break in the door, the trunk or the ignition? Does the head in your hand hold a transponder chip or remote, and does the car start with the spare if there is one? Is the steering wheel locked, which can hold an ignition cylinder under tension and pin the fragment in place? Do the other doors open with the same key, or is the vehicle on a different key for the ignition and doors? These answers decide whether the job is a door extraction and a new blade, or an ignition extraction that needs the wheel freed and the wafers checked first.
Scene 2
A cylinder that broke a key because it was frozen needs the ice dealt with before the fragment will move. The locksmith works lock de-icer into the keyway, or holds gentle heat near the cylinder, until the ice inside liquefies and the plug loosens. Boiling water from the kettle stays indoors: it refreezes inside the keyway and can split a cold cylinder. With the plug free and at rest, the extraction proceeds as normal. Afterwards the cylinder is dried thoroughly and given a water-repelling dry lubricant rather than one that traps moisture, so the same morning is far less likely to repeat.
Scene 3
For a vehicle, the head of the key that carries the transponder chip and remote buttons has usually been saved, and a new blade cut and fitted to it, so the car recognizes the key as it always did. The door lock and ignition have been tested with it, and the ignition wafers checked for damage from the break. It is a good moment to have a second complete key made, since a car with one key is a car one snap away from a tow. Lightening the key ring so it does not hang on the ignition adds years to both key and cylinder.

Sometimes, and the visit answers it. A key that failed from its own fatigue in a clean, smooth cylinder says nothing against the lock. A key that broke because the pins were worn flat, the cap had loosened or the keyway was full of grit says the cylinder needs a service or a rekey. One that broke in a corroded, pitted plug is telling you the lock is due for replacement.
Often fatigue, though not the only cause. A brass blade is weakest where the deepest cut leaves the least metal, and thousands of turns can slowly work a crack into that spot. Then one morning something asks more of it: a frozen cylinder, a bolt binding in a swollen door, grit in the keyway, or turning before the key was fully in. A bent, worn or poorly cut key can also fail on its own, with no such trigger. The lock is inspected afterwards to find which applied.
Yes. Small cylinders in padlocks, mailboxes, desk drawers, filing cabinets and cam locks on lockers hold a fragment the same way a door does, and the same slim hooks and spirals fit them. Their keyways are narrower, so it is finer work. Where a padlock is not worth saving, the locksmith will say so and offer a cut-off and a new padlock keyed to your preference instead.
